Longfield House
Situated in rural West Devon, between Okehampton & Launceston
Tel: 01837 871431
Only a brisk walk or short drive from Roadford Lake, Longfield House, Germansweek offers one superior, ensuite, double bedroom for discerning, non-smoking guests who prefer to relax without the enforced company of others.
Situation
Accessed by a private driveway, with ample off-road parking, the centrally heated, double-glazed house is situated within its own, level 7 acres of gardens and grounds with ponds, arboretum and lawns which guests are free to use and enjoy. Visitors may arrive by helicopter if they wish! There are views across the countryside to Brentor, Dartmoor and Roadford Lake and an evening stroll with complimentary drink in hand is a relaxing and enjoyable way to pass the pre-dinner period.
The Bedroom
The double bedroom is equipped with kettle, fresh milk, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Mineral water is also supplied. A hairdrier is provided. The furniture is antique and the bed is normally made up with blankets but a duvet is optional. There is a Teletext TV, a clock/radio and the expected personal touches such as toiletries for guests’ use. The ensuite bathroom has a bath with shower and is complete with bidet.
Food
Tea and cake are offered on arrival. Breakfast is taken in the guests’ own lounge/dining room and will be as complete as we can make it with local preserves and produce where applicable. Dinner can be provided if required – the proprietor has been a chef in his previous life – and homegrown vegetables and local meats and fish will always be used where possible. The price will be very reasonable in comparison with restaurant rates. Complimentary wine or other drink will accompany guests’ meals.
Facilities
We also have a self-contained games room (with toilet), offering table tennis, bar-football, darts, TV, CD player/radio etc. Board games, playing cards and so on are available for guests’ use. There are fax and photocopier facilities and telephone socket for laptop modem connection. There is a range of books and other reading matter available to choose from.
Relaxation
The location is very quiet and peaceful, one of the most tranquil in the country and visitors invariably sleep as they seldom have before. There is no traffic noise, fumes nor light pollution – you can stargaze and look for meteorites on clear nights. Remember, we only cater for two guests at a time so solitude and privacy are assured.
The emphasis is on relaxation and informality: we have a lovely location and guests are encouraged to make the most of it.
The Consideration
The daily charge is £32.00 per person for the room and breakfast for two people’s stay. Single occupancy rates on application. Three-course dinner with coffee and complimentary apéritif and wine or other drink is currently £18.00 per person. Because we only entertain two people at any one time, guests will find us to be very interactive and flexible over the menu! Please email for examples of the menus used. Our neighbours run an organic farm, supplying milk and beef and we grow many of our own vegetables so the ingredients are wholesome and flavour-filled. In order to maintain the minimum of regulation and avoid the few spoiling things for the many, we may ask that guests settle their accounts the evening before departure.
The Area & Activities
Roadford Lake is our neighbouring attraction. Germansweek is situated at the northern end of this beautiful 720 acre expanse of water. Wildlife and birdwatching are encouraged at this end and fishing allowed, whilst there are a visitor centre, restaurant and watersports at the southern end.
Holsworthy, Okehampton, Launceston and Hatherleigh are all within about a 20 minute drive. The A30 dual carriageway is close enough to be convenient but far enough away not to be heard! To get to Exeter only takes us thirty five minutes, Bude is similar and central Plymouth is around an hour away. There are numerous visitor attractions and natural features in this part of the country. There is a range of restaurants and pubs in the area, although none within easy walking distance. Top-rated Percy’s Restaurant is in the next parish.
Our village is effectively central for Devon and Cornwall: Penzance and Minehead take similar times to reach as do Salcombe and Ilfracombe. A glance at a map shows Okehampton (our nearest town) to be the hub of the two counties.
